watered-down, last year's flame red holiday bundle is better!By Ming Liu
I don't know why Nintendo releases the "same" holiday bundle two years in a row. Did they run out of the ideas? Maybe, or it was a huge success they want to repeat it this year. Either way, you would expect the same if it's not better this year but that's not the case. At first glance, the two bundles look almost identical, the same flame red console with the same game included but the close examination will tell you this year's offer is significantly worse, here is why.
1. They remove the charging cradle from the package. Well the cradle is not required to charge the battery, but still it's a nice accessory, now you have to purchase it at $19.99 if you want one.
2. The Super Mario 3D land game is "PRE-INSTALLED", which means you can only play it on YOUR console, you don't really own the game. Your family or friends can't borrow the game from you unless you also loan them the console, and of course you can't trade the game once you get tired of playing it since you don't have a physical copy.
So if you are looking for the festive holiday bundle, get the last year's version if you can, at least you will have a nice charging cradle and a real retail copy of the Mario 3D land game with case and cover art.
UPDATE: Nintendo is phasing out the old 3DS packages , the current 3DS models in the market no longer have the charging cradle included. So it seems unfair to single out this one for lacking the cradle, therefore I upgrade it to 4-star.

My son saved his $ to buy this for himself. He is thrilled with it. If I let him, he would play it for hours. He has been very happy with it

There is no question that Nintendo has had so much highs and lows with their video games. But for the past decade, they have been the one constant with delivering definitive games for on the go. That has shown with the NIntendo DS and all the variations from the DS Lite, to the Nintendo DSi, and with the Nintendo 2DS, but the Nintendo 3DS which came out back in 2011 is definitely one of the more surprising systems. While there have been some great games fr the system, they have had the ability to make some of them worth their while than Super Mario 3D Land. It really was the groundbreaker for the Nintendo 3DS no just in gameplay, but fun and challenge. Now, the game is available as a bundle pack and for its money, it is well-received for the dollar.
Nintendo 3DS Holiday Bundle is a great buy for anyone that hasn't carried over into the Nintendo 3DS, or any of the DS systems past and present. The bundle features Super Mario 3D Land, a quest where Mario and Luigi have to go through a 3D escape to rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser, and his fierce foes from Boom-Boom, and his sister Pow-Pow, and wild airships to make it to the finish line. The graphics are definitely the best that it has been in a Mario Game on the go in years as you go through a 3D world that definitely looks breathtaking in color and design as you beat foes from goombas, to stoppers and the wild shadow Mario minions that try and chase your every move. The control of the game is absolutely sturdy and the gameplay is definitely a solid challenge. Not only by going through the challenge of Bowser, but by trying to make it with little time in many challenges and grabbing as many clocks to keep you going, to battles with Dry Bowser and his fierce blue fire breath.. It definitely is a great game that really puts the 2D challenges from Mario games before like Super Mario 3 and Super Mario World that are just part of Nintendo's drive to keep the challenges fresh and fun after all these years of innovation. The extras also add to the challenge from boomerang suits to the return of the tanooki suit from Super Mario 3 that this times makes you flutter and swat your foes with a swap of the tail, to classic power-ups like the star and fire flower, as Mario & Luigi each try and complete numerous worlds of fun and challenge that are worth their all.
All in all, there is so much hype for the systems at home from Sony & Microsoft with the Xbox One and the Sony Playstation 4 on the wish list of gamers everywhere. But if you really want a gaming challenge on the go, only Nintendo can make that challenge worth the while. This Nintendo 3DS Super Mario 3D Land bundle pack is definitely worth the money. It is a great buy that is pipe dreams worth of fun. The 3DS has some really great games like Mario Kart 7 and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon that are worth their money. But overall, if you really want your challenge for the 3DS that is basic for new gamers to Nintendo, this is one I absolutely recommend.
